First iceberg

Hello everyone,

As I had expected, most of us got sick on board as the ocean wasn’t calm at all, especially between 40° and 5O° south! But it is over now and yesterday we saw our first iceberg, and went through our first ice cap, it was very beautiful and very special! Life on board isn’t quite exciting as it is just a cargo ship, so nothing much to do. We watch movies, either in our rooms or together in common rooms, we write e-mails, we sometimes go on the bridge to take a fresh breath etc. The atmosphere in the group is very good though, no tension at all which is very nice. Everyone jokes, laughs and talks in different languages. Only the contact with the Russian crew is very limited, they don’t especially like to talk... Russian food isn’t the best I've ever tasted, but it could be much worse so we don’t complain, we all bought some chocolate, wine and much more before leaving the Cape, so we have our little extras!

Sometimes we prepare the unloading phase, it’s going to be very tricky as we have 600 tons of cargo to unload on ice, no mistake is allowed here!

We’re know heading for the Norwegian station at 73°South 5°East, we first have to unload their material. The only problem is that we don’t know yet if we’ll be able to get there; the last ice map we got from the satellite showed thick and fix ice at least 300km around 5°East, we’re not sure we can get through it... If we can’t, we might get stuck in the ice for a while… we’ll see.
